Using the Modular Grid Effectively

Using the Modular Grid Effectively

When presenting complex information, consider legibility, readability, and negative space. Breaking information down into manageable chunks results in clearer, more effective layouts.

Modular grids can be a valuable tool when building your spread or cover. By using the modular grid feature within our system, you can separate content into organized sections and synthesize a continuous visual narrative. This approach also helps ensure that graphic or photographic elements fill similar blocks of space, creating a consistent or nearly consistent format throughout. This includes typography and the purpose it serves within the content.

Playing with size and weight in contrast to explanatory copy or artwork helps make a page or cover easier to follow. Typography can and should be approached using the same design principles, controlling weight, scale, and color to guide the viewer’s eye.

Especially for a cover, typography can make a significant difference between information that is conveyed clearly and cohesively, or a design that feels eclectic or overly whimsical.

Do not let the modular grid overwhelm you, not every module needs to be filled. It is simply a feature that allows you to determine precise increments and manage multiple details with greater control.

Once you are finished designing, or if you would like to review your progress, you can turn the modular grid off. You will then see a more structured and refined composition, where a letter, ornament, title, or mascot can become the main focal point, supported intentionally by negative space.
